Ranting and Raving: Five New Manifestos Tonight
There are few things more embarrassing than forgetting everything. At last night's Book in the Head it became apparent that everybody, save from Scream Alumni Hugh Thomas and Maria Erskine, had a giant bowl of Shreddies for memories. Maggie Helwig did her best to coax Hamlet out of the audience, with the help of a living prompt book but alas the great play was largely sucked down the memory-hole. Audio recordings have been made of the event and we hope to have a chapbook available (the rewritten version of Hamlet, as remembered by 14 people in a basement) for the July 13th Scream in High Park.
Tonight begins at 7PM at the Supermarket where Kate Eichhorn will lead our Keynote panel centered around the question of the festival: Is the book dead? To start, Barbara Goddard, Caitlin Fisher, Bill Kennedy, Jay MillAr and Margaret Christakos will all present their manifestos in response, before sitting down and stirring up lively discussion about the current state of the book. The keynote is always the intellectual hub of the festival and this event promises to be excellent.
After the panel, we'll celebrate the launch of the newest issue of Canada's supreme literary criticism journal Open Letter. There will be readings from a. rawlings, Jenny Sampirsi, Trish Salah and Erin Gray.
Be there at 7 PM to catch all the action. If you are out of town, do note that we'll be streaming the whole event here on the website.
For those who have not grabbed up Dennis Lee Book Length Tickets, now's the time. The deadline for purchase is tomorrow!
