Death by Book in the Head!

Yesterday began in the sun at This Ain't the Rosedale Library with Sounds from Beyond: The Marclay Project Salon. It was a fascinating combination of visual and auditory elements of Christian Marclay's original project. All this AND a surprise set from Sundar Subramanian. We can hardly wait until next Sunday when This Ain't again hosts the Scream, this time presenting Musique Concrète: The Hymn of the Typesetters.

We then invaded the Yorkville library for Incidental Reading: Melvil Dewey fights back. The audience packed the space and were gifted with a near overwhelming number of outstanding performances hidden in the library: Stuart Ross read from the mystery section; Mitch Smolkin prepped for an audition in the drama area; Marc Glassman trumpeted "Viva the Book!"; Vera Frenkel read beautifully over her film Notes from the Scaffolding Archive; Kate Eichhorn gave a lovely lecture on the archive and simultaneity. And this doesn't even include Theo Heras and Kent Price providing wonderful music or Jacob McArthur Mooney's stunning poetry. Thanks again to the Toronto Public Library, in particular the Yorkville branch and staff, for generously providing the space.

Today is a slightly slower day with only one event. But that event! Maggie Helwig is leading the Book in the Head Salon at TYPE Books at 8 PM. We'll be asking: If book objects disappeared, what would be left? How do the books we carry in our memories relate to the books on our shelves? With these questions in mind, participants will be asked to recreate from memory a classic text (to be revealed only at the event itself). It's going to be a lot of fun! In addition, if you haven't seen Dead Weight: TYPE Gallery you can play along AND check out all the great book art.

The Scream Literary Festival would not be possible without the generous funding of the Canada Council for the Arts, The Department of Canadian Heritage (through its Arts Presentation Program), The Ontario Arts Council and The Toronto Arts Council. Site designed by Stop14 Media.
